Land Based Activities
Walking
The Roseland is a walker’s paradise. Being a peninsula, the Roseland has a great variety of both coastal and inland walks offering fabulous walking all year round. An array of circular walks can occupy a whole day, or a morning or afternoon if time is short. Walking guides and booklets are available from Roseland Visitor Centre and from local shops.
Castle
Together with the larger and later more dominant Pendennis Castle, St Mawes Castle was built near the waterline by Henry VIII to guard the entrance to the safe anchorage in the Carrick Roads. Three huge circular bastions arranged in a cloverleaf pattern, with multiple gun ports were formidable defences indeed! Today, the castle stands intact and although re-fortified throughout its history, it is a Tudor time capsule wanting to be explored. Set in landscaped grounds, which provide some fine views of the surrounding coastline, it is an ideal place for a picnic.
Gardens
The Gardens on the Roseland are varied, from a garden window onto the sea to an inspirational plantsman's garden, there is something for everyone.
Look out for "Open Garden's", private gardens opened from time to time, usually to raise money for local charities.
