Falmouth
Located on the South Cornish Coast at the entrance of a large natural harbour, Falmouth’s strategic location led to the town being established as one of the most important packet ship ports in the UK. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries, and by 1871 40 packet ships were carrying passengers and mail to the Americas, the West Indies, Europe and the Mediterranean. The town has retained its maritime importance as the start and finish of many a transatlantic voyage, and offers fist class sheltered waters for sailing and diving. Falmouth regularly welcomes Tall Ships to its waters and hosts sailing events such as Falmouth Week and the Pendennis Cup.
The bustling town centre has many specialist art and antique shops as well as an abundance of cafés, restaurants and hotels offering a wide selection of cuisine.
Artists have been drawn to Falmouth for many years by its climate, quality of light and relaxed atmosphere, making the town a creative centre. University College Falmouth has built an international reputation for the quality of its teaching. Falmouth’s student population add to the town’s vibrant atmosphere with plenty of venues to enjoy film, music and other entertainment. The award winning Falmouth Art Gallery (free entry) has one of the most important art collections in Cornwall.
Exotic sub-tropical plants thrive in Falmouth’s mild maritime climate and many of the local parks and gardens can be enjoyed year round. Falmouth also has a number of indoor attractions and activities including the National Maritime Museum Cornwall (pop into the Visitor Centre and collect a voucher for 10% discount before you go) and Pendennis Castle.
Gyllyngvase Beach, which has won a Blue Flag award, is within walking distance of the town centre. Swanpool Beach and Maenporth Beach are sandy family beaches within a short distance of the town.
The beautiful Fal estuary is best appreciated from the water. Scenic boat trips on the Enterprise to destinations upriver such as Trelissick Gardens, Smuggler’s Cottage and Truro make for an enjoyable car free day out. A pedestrian ferry links Falmouth to St Mawes year round, offering a pleasant half hour trip across the harbour.
